GE’s 6F Gas Turbines to Help Power Bangladesh, Adding Nearly 200 Megawatts of Electricity

August 21, 2013

  • GE to Supply China Chengda Engineering Co., Ltd. with Two 6F Gas Turbines for Installation at Bhola, Bangladesh
  • First Advanced F-Class Gas Turbine-Generator Installation in Bangladesh in This Megawatt Range
  • New Project Builds on GE’s Growing Presence in the Region

DHAKA, BANGLADESH—August 22, 2013—GE (NYSE: GE) has signed a contract to supply two 6F gas turbine-generators that will produce nearly 200 megawatts of power to supplement Bangladesh’s power generation capacity. China Chengda Engineering, an international engineering corporation, will install the gas turbines at a gas-based combined-cycle power plant at Bhola, operated by the Bangladesh government.

GE’s 6F gas turbine will be the first advanced F-class gas turbine-generator installed in Bangladesh in this megawatt range. Expected to start up by the year 2015, the new power plant will help Bangladesh increase its electricity supply by delivering power with high efficiency, availability, reliability and low emissions.

“GE is known for its advanced technologies and strong manufacturing capabilities around the globe,” said Mr. Cao Guang, chairman and CEO, China Chengda Engineering Co., Ltd. “With GE’s strong proven technical expertise, we are confident that the Bhola project will be successful in providing professional solutions to the project owner.”

More than 150 6F gas turbines have been selected by customers on all continents, including recent orders in Pakistan, China, India and Russia. The 6F is known for its high efficiency, mid-size fit and robustness to deliver reliable electricity in remote areas, heat to municipalities and steam to industries. GE’s fleet of 6F turbines has accumulated more than 4 million operating hours.

“GE is dedicated to providing innovative products and technology to produce the reliable power needed to support Bangladesh with its growing energy needs,” said Victor Abate, president and CEO—Power Generation Products for GE Power & Water. “Our efficient, reliable and proven technology and services help meet our customers’ immediate power generation needs and longer-term goals to advance their energy infrastructures.”

In 2013, GE has won contracts to supply gas turbines that together will produce 900 megawatts of power to expand Bangladesh’s power generation capacity significantly. In addition to the 6F gas turbines for the Bhola power plant, GE received orders to supply 9F gas turbines for two power plants in Siddirganj and Bibiyana, Bangladesh. The new power plants support the government’s objective to increase the country’s electricity capacity from 8 to 20 gigawatts in the next six to eight years.

First introduced in 1995, the highly efficient 6F gas turbine is a mid-sized choice for combined cycle or cogeneration for 100- to 300-megawatt power blocks. Engineered for 50- or 60-Hz applications, GE's durable 6F gas turbine delivers power with high efficiency, availability and reliability, coupled with low emissions and low life-cycle costs. Featuring a compact layout, fuel flexibility and strategic configuration options, the 6F gas turbine excels in a variety of applications for decentralized power generators, industrial cogeneration and district heating users.
